Rematch

So.

    Tut mir wirklich leid.

    Liebe Grüße,

    Vanessa

  6. Hi Sina,

We're sorry you're so disappointed with us. We now know that we aren't a good fit for the Au Pair program, but it's not true that we don't need help -- we're struggling even now trying to find a long term solution to child care. We won't bother with trying to get another Au Pair -- it'd be a large chore to find an Au Pair as good as you.

We all care about you a great deal and consider you family. Even so, we've struggled with a difficult choice for the past 4 months: do we keep Sina and try to make her happy or do we admit failure and go into transition? We've tried everything we can think of to make you happy with us: time at the M/Spa with Mario, seeking your input on how to make things better, and even at the end we tried dropping your hours to a minimum. All the while, we've been following this blog to find that nothing works and that you're happiest when you're not with us.

We would often reconsider if you wanted more of a family or employee relationship with us. Our Disneyland offer was one attempt where we tried to answer this: Do we spend $1500 for Sina to go with the family if she's going to be unhappy the entire time (is it even legal to be unhappy at The Happiest Place on Earth(tm)?) Our answer, perhaps seen as unfair, was to see if you'd buy an entry ticket. If you don't believe $180 is worth a week in Disneyland with our family when we'd be paying you $200 for that time anyhow, then it's probably a good indicator that you don't really want to go. We believe it was a fair test... the unfair part: we would've bought your ticket for you if you had said "yes", since that's a clear indication you really wanted to go. You said "no" because you didn't want to spend money to visit Southern California again -- a place you've been many times since. This felt a bit "employee" like to us, but you have done many loving things as well and we still consider you family and love and care about you.

It would've been *very* easy to just let you grind out the last months-- it's our least expensive option, since we've already paid everything to the program and would only be due your stipend (all options are at least 4x more expensive!) But, what kind of people would that make us? I think deep down you know that we care about everyone in our lives. Even if it inconveniences everyone to put you in rematch, we want you to have a chance at the happiness we failed to provide you. I know you keep saying you're happy, but your actions and blog entries speak otherwise.

This was one of the most difficult decisions we've ever had to make, but we're certain that giving you a chance to be happy was a good one. We have a wish that 6 to 12 months from now you look back at this time and know that we did the right thing. Will you be happier? We can't be sure... but, that choice is entirely yours now and we're no longer blocking you from achieving the happiness we desperately want you to have.

We'll always reflect positively on the time you spent with us and you'll always be welcome to stay with us in your world travels. If not too awkward for you, we'd still love to take you out to dinner to give you a proper send off -- you left in such a hurry the other night.

As our family says when they toast each other at dinner, "Happy Life!".

    With Love,
    Brand & Michelle

  7. To Brand:

Why do you think you're not a good fit for the au pair program? There also are tons of au pairs who really want a family relationship.
My host mom said 3 years ago (before I left for the US, also as an au pair): "Our children do not have much family other than us, and we want them to form relationships with their caregivers as if they were family."
And we still keep in touch!
I think, finding an au pair who's THE fit for your family, will simplify and brighten your lives in many ways...

  8. To Claire:

I'm sure there are lots of Au Pairs that are looking for a family relationship... I'd be afraid of any that weren't. We think Sina found a family relationship with us as well, it was just difficult to balance all of her interests and obligations... even so, we still consider her part of our family and she's welcome to visit anytime.

Our realization that we're not a "good fit" had nothing to do with our experience with Sina... in fact, because of Sina, we may try the Au Pair program again when our kids are older.

Right now, our kids are young and growing up fast... we're trying to find a way to pay for help with house chores rather than someone to look after our children. I.e. we want to spend all our time with our kids and find someone to do everything else. :-) That's not a task for an Au Pair -- it may not be a task for anyone, but that's what we're trying to explore.
